Consulting before a suspension

Consult medical experts

These experts can:

• offer advice about how the subject is likely to respond to their situation based on their medical and psychological condition
• prepare a report that analyses whether or not the subject is likely to be alive, and at what point their survival is unlikely.

Add this information to the profile of the subject.

Consult the coroner

If you have evidence that the subject is deceased, you must contact the coroner’s office before you suspend the operation.

Consider asking the coroner to visit the SAR operation while it is still being carried out. The coroner can provide guidance and information even if they are not able to attend the SAR operation.

Consult other experts

During the operation, you may have gathered more information about the subject by consulting with other experts. If you are considering a suspension, you should contact the experts you have consulted to:

• let them know you are considering a suspension
• ask them for further advice in their area of expertise.
